AKITA – July 2009 - Relating Culture to the teaching of communication strategies - Alastair Graham-Marr. This workshop examined the ties between culture and the use of communication strategies in L1. It focused on two broad categories of communication strategies - affective and management. The presentation highlighted the fact that the use of affective strategies differs between speakers from different cultures. There was also a lively discussion of Krashen's Input Hypothesis versus Merrill's Output Hypothesis. Finally, the workshop examined whether or not learners of English within an Asian context would benefit from the explicit teaching of communication strategies, and if so, how these strategies might be introduced to learners. This was one of the most entertaining and enlightening presentations that we have had, and the audience responded with enthusiasm throughout the workshop.

Akita - September 2009 - My Lesson by Akita Chapter Officers and Members. Born out of the idea of doing small presentations using lessons from the "My Share" section of The Language Teacher, this meeting centered round what the Akita Chapter Officers did as part of their classroom lessons. One presentation involved showing how Total Physical Response activities, using ECC Jr. materials, were tailored to elementary and junior high school learners teaching them “useful expressions”; another described how to use the JACET 8000 test series to chart the progress of mixed ability college students; one involved the entire attending group in a fill-in-the-blank listening activity utilizing music and lyrics; another laid out a 2 to 3 hour personal study process of watching, recording, writing descriptions of, and meticulously cataloging ABC World News Tonight with Charlie Gibson; and one described a task-based lesson called “World Traveler,” where students are called upon to discuss past travel experiences, while also having to create and present their own original travel plan. Along with formal presentations, interesting ideas by those in attendance employing reading, shadowing and focused listening were introduced, and thoroughly discussed. This was a new and successful meeting format for Akita!
